Dramatic championship game ends with Team BBCA winning Nelson Cup Championship, defeating Team BBH-B 72-66

By: Clyde

The first season of the Lincoln David Nelson Basketball cup concluded with Team BBCA hoisting the trophy over Team BBH-B.

In a game that was close all throughout as the lead kept shifting back and forth, Team BBCA made the big plays down the stretch to prevail over the men of Team B.

Team BBH ended the 1st quarter with the lead but Team BBCA put together a solid 2nd quarter to take the lead at the half. This was only a preview to a dramatic 2nd half.

In the 3rd quarter, neither team was able to score a lot with the defensive intensity turned up as the period ended with the score deadlocked at 48-48.

Team BBCA responded again with several quick baskets to take another lead but Team BBH went on another run over the next few minutes to lead again. As the time wound down, Team BBCA put in another scoring spurt to take the lead for good which they held on until the end. By: Clyde

In the first game of the evening, BBH Team A shook off an early deficit to turn back Team C, 80-73, and grab 3rd place for the tournament.

Pastor Angelou Esto added 15 points as Team A put three players in double figure scoring. Overcoming an early deficit that had them down by 7 points in the first quarter, Team A clamped down on defense in the 3rd quarter to grab the lead that they would not relinquish. Each time Team C tried to make a run, Team A would respond enough to preserve their slim lead. 2013 Lincoln David Nelson Basketball Cup Game 3 Recap: Team C squanders the lead as Team A overtakes them for the win, 70-55

For the men of BBH Team C, the way this game followed a familiar script: Strong play early and having the lead, only to lose steam and get blown away in the end.

Team C jumped out to an early lead behind the solid contributions from their starters and the early absence of several of Team A’s key players. They would carry that lead into the fourth quarter but would find it hard to score from then on, losing by 15 points at the buzzer, 70-55.

Once again, the dynamic duo of Joel Go and James Lee Salahag led the way for Team A as they tallied 24 points, 8 rebounds & 6 assists for Go, and 17 points, 7 rebounds & 5 assists for Salahag. Frederick “Toto” Beniag filled up the box score with 7 points, 5 rebounds & 4 assists. Jeriel Brent “Ading” Agne’s 6 steals led the defense for Team A aside from his contributions of 15 points to the cause. Pastor Angelo Esto was timely with his 5 points, 5 assists & 4 steals as he only played in the 4th quarter as a late arrival, sparking his team to the win with his fresh energy.

For Team C, Piniel Yambagon put up another double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds as he again carried the load for his team, playing the entire game without rest. Louel Binahon chipped in with 12 points to go along with his 5 rebounds and team-high 3 steals. Pastor Jess Mendoza added 9 points of his own.

Team C had a small lead at the beginning of the 4th quarter but the lack of bench play and the depth of their opponents found them unable to match the pace as they found themselves outscored in the deciding period.

Final Score: 70-55
Team A, 70: Go, 24; Salahag, 17; Agne, 15; Beniag, 7; Esto, 5, Marfil 2.
Team BBH C, 55: Yambagon, 24; Binahon, 12; Mendoza, 9; Robeniol, 4; Solomon, 4; Panganiban, 2.

Game 2 Recap: Team BBCA explodes in the 4th Quarter to win over BBH Team C 90-67

by Clyde Tauli

After three quarters of a tightly contested game, Team BBCA (Bethel Baptist Christian Academy) found its stride in the 4th quarter to blow open the game and grab the win over Team BBH-C.

Leading by only 4 points, 56-52, at the start of the final period, Team BBCA capitalized on their strength and energy as they outscored Team BBH-C by 19 points, 34-15, in the decisive 4th quarter.

Team BBCA put all five starters in double figures as they spread the scoring around. Salvador Dahuloran spearheaded the charge with a team-high 19 points, completing his performance with 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 7 steals. Jethro Perino had 18 points and Johann Balatayo put up 17. Pastor Shenn Jay Bihag and Jeremy Perino also poured in 11 points each.

Piniel Yambagon put up a monster effort with 27 points and 17 rebounds, doing everything to keep his team in the game, but lost steam late as Team BBH-C couldn’t keep up with the speed and endurance of their opponents. Louel Binahon added 19 points, scoring most of them on drives to the basket. Pastor Jess Mendoza, putting his erstwhile scoring skills on display, put 10 points on the board.

But the story of this game was the vigor of youth triumphing over the skill of maturity.

With their younger players unavailable for the evening, Team BBH-C fielded a lineup with an average age over 40. Facing the young legs of the opposition, Team BBH-C was able to match their play for most of the game, even holding the lead early, before gassing out and yielding at the end.
